​Protection from Abuse

There are a number of programs and services available to help someone who is suffering from any form of abuse, neglect, abandonment, or exploitation. There are hotline numbers, shelter programs, counseling services, and more. Options include both private pay and publicly funded programs. 

Here are some of the types of services that exist:

  • Shelters – temporary residence for victims of domestic violence, individuals experiencing homelessness, women and families
  • Protective services – services provided to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals who are in danger of being mistreated or neglected
  • Domestic violence services – temporary residence, counseling, legal assistance, and housing relocation
  • Sexual assault services – counseling, support, and legal assistance

To report child abuse, call 1-800-932-0313. To report abuse of an older adult or person with a disability, call 1-800-490-8505. If you are in immediate danger, please contact 911.

  • Area Agencies on Aging
    The AAAs, both county and non-profit, are a vital source for information, planning, monitoring, providing cost-effective care, and advocating for Pennsylvania's older citizens. AAAs are community designers and builders of support systems that enable older people to be active and vital in their communities. AAAs also serve as a gatekeeper, providing assessment and options as alternatives to costly institutionalization.

    The US Department of Veterans Affairs provides a variety of information regarding Health Care, Benefits, Career Training, and other services. This website is designed for veterans, family members and spouses, employees, and businesses.

  • ASERT (The Autism Services, Education, Resources, and Training Collaborative)
    The Autism Services, Education, Resources, and Training Collaborative (ASERT) is a key strategy of the Department of Human Services Bureau of Autism Services for meeting the needs of Pennsylvanians with autism and their family members, community members, and the providers who support them. The ASERT Resource Center offers information about local, regional, and statewide events, professional trainings, community resources, services, current research, and other relevant information.

  • SDHP (Self-Determination Housing Project of Pennsylvania, Inc.)
    The Self Determination Housing Project of PA, Inc. is a statewide non-profit organization that works to expand housing options for people with disabilities in Pennsylvania. The mission of SDHP is to promote self-determination and control in housing choice for people with disabilities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  • DDAP (Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs)The mission of the Department of Drug and Alcohol Program is to engage, coordinate, and lead the commonwealth's effort to prevent and reduce drug, alcohol, and gambling addiction and abuse; and promote recovery. The program's website offers information on potential benefits; locating a provider; and overdose awareness, among other drug and alcohol relevant topics.
