Health Care

There are a wide variety of health care programs available in Pennsylvania that can help with prescription costs, insurance, end-of-life planning, finding hospitals, clinics, and more. Options include both private pay and publicly funded programs.

Here are some of the types of services that exist:

  • Prescriptions – paying for your medications and counseling about prescription plans
  • Insurance – Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and paying for insurance
  • Health care facilities – hospitals, clinics, and state health centers
  • Health care services in the home – therapy, home health, and personal care
  • End-of-life services and supports – hospice, palliative care, and end-of-life planning

    The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities.

  • Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP)
    The mission of the Department of Drug and Alcohol Program is to engage, coordinate, and lead the commonwealth's effort to prevent and reduce drug, alcohol, and gambling addiction and abuse; and promote recovery. The program's website offers information on potential benefits; locating a provider; and overdose awareness, among other drug and alcohol relevant topics.

    PA Medi is a free health insurance counseling program designed to help older Pennsylvanians with Medicare. Counselors are trained staff and volunteers who can answer questions and provide objective, easy-to-understand information about Medicare, Medicare Supplemental Insurance, Medicaid, and Long-Term Care Insurance.

  • Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE)
    The Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE), the Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly Needs Enhancement Tier (PACENET), and PACE plus Medicare are Pennsylvania's prescription assistance programs for older adults, offering low-cost prescription medication to qualified residents, age 65 and older.

    COMPASS is an online application that allows Pennsylvanians (Adults and Children) the ability to screen for, apply for, and renew many health and human service programs. They include: Medical Assistance (MA), Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), Long Term Care Services, etc.

  • Special Pharmaceutical Benefits Program (SPBP)
    Pennsylvania Department of Human Services
    This program provides service to individuals with behavioral health needs who do not respond to first-line drug therapies and who are not eligible for pharmaceutical coverage under Medicaid.     The Independent Enrollment Broker is an entity that provides enrollment services for individuals with physical disabilities and older Pennsylvanians who are applying for services within the Department of Human Services Office of Long Term Living. The PA Independent Enrollment Broker will work closely with service coordination providers and other key individuals in order to respond to needs, address issues, and ensure individuals receive services in a timely manner.

    This Program offers individuals age 55 and older who are nursing-facility clinically eligible a community-based alternative to nursing home care.   • DOH HIP (Head Injury Program)

    The goal of this program, offered by the PA Department of Health, helps to fund a year of rehabilitation for individuals with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This website describes the services provided, eligibility criteria, where to call, and how to enroll.

  • Special Pharmaceutical Benefits Program (SPBP)

    This website provides information on how individuals living with a diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, who are not eligible for pharmacy services under the Medical Assistance Program, can obtain pharmaceutical assistance and specific lab services.

  • Special Kids Network
