Refugees in PA Success Story

Monita Saru

Monita Saru fled Bhutan with her father, mother, and five siblings to come to the United States, eventually settling in Harrisburg in 2012. Her parents worked hard to afford a life that allowed their children to attend school.

While still in high school, Monita, applied to become a U.S. citizen, and with the help of the International Service Center (ISC), she passed.

Monita, thankful for the opportunities afforded her, decided to volunteer at the ISC to assist other less-fortunate refugees to achieve their goals. After her graduation from Central Dauphin East High School in 2018, she got a full-time job as a cashier at a variety shop in Harrisburg, all the while continuing her volunteer work at the ISC.

Because of her hard work, Monita saved enough money to pursue her dream of becoming a flight attendant and travel the world. She began her training at the Travel Academy in Minnesota in March 2019. We at the Refugee Resettlement Program wish Monita good luck. Fly high, Monita!
